Mu-metal (μ-metal), or mumetal, is a nickel and iron based alloy. Its name comes from the Greek symbol μ, used to highlight magnetic permeability.
There are different grades of mu-metal, depending on the manufacturer.
"French" mu-metal is composed of 80% nickel, 15% iron and 5% molybdenum; its symbolic designation as per the European norm is therefore NiFe15Mo5.
"German" mu-metal is composed of 77% nickel, 15% iron, 5% copper and 3% molybdenum (NiFe15Cu5Mo3).
This material displays a very high magnetic permeability, which enables it attract lines of magnetic fields. Those properties are acquired through a heat treatment enabling the enlargement of its grain (recrystallization annealing).
Mu-metal's high permeability makes it an excellent material to deviate static or low-frequency magnetic fields, against which other alleviation methods are hardly efficient.
Mu-metal is used in the manufacturing of magnetic shielding for industry or research.
We can supply mu-metal coils or sheets on request.
